About the production

Cigáni idú do neba

Director and choreographer Ján Ďurovčík brings together two Slovak ensembles of world standing and the spontaneous, untamed culture of the nomadic Roma in an entirely new, sweeping music and dance féerie.

It is full of surprising, breathtaking dance scenes performed by the Slovak Dance Theatre. It is full of virtuoso cimbalom solos by Ernest Šarközi and the other members of the Cigánski diabli orchestra. It is full of love and longing, of freedom and liberty.

The féerie is inspired by the legendary story by Moldovan director Emil Loteanu, whose film sold out cinemas and won festival awards in the 1970s. The original film draws on stories by Maxim Gorky and is set in the north-east of the former Austro-Hungarian monarchy.
